Chris and I have just spent our first night in Laos. If yesterday was anything to go by, I think I'm going to love living here :)
We left Sydney at 9pm on Sunday night. We stopped over in Brisbane to pick up and drop off passengers, and then were off to Bangkok. It allegedly took 11 hours, but it went pretty quickly for me because I did a lot of sleeping. We met up with the rest of the AYAD's (who had flown from Melbourne) in Bangkok's massive new airport, and then flew onto Vientiane (only one hour). After we arrived we checked into a lovely guesthouse on what is Vientiane's equivalent of the Champs Elysees (there's a replica of the Arc de Triomphe at the end of the street). We'll be staying there for the next two weeks whilst we go about our orientation.
After we had a shower (by the way, the weather has been fantastic - no rain, no humidity, just sunny skies - although I have been fortunate enough to be in a lot of air conditioned environments) we headed off to lunch. The first thing Chris bit into was a chilli (unknown to him) so I think he's a bit worried about the food. I loved it :-)
After lunch we picked up some SIM cards and phones - I'm unlikely to use the phone except while I'm here, but if you'd like the number please let me know :-) Then it was off for a 75 min traditional Lao herbal massage (for $US8!) - which is very similar to Thai massage (I took a course in Thai massage two years ago). Then we headed across the road to have BeerLao and dinner on the side of the Mekong River as the sun set - absolutely beautiful.
It's time to head into our talks by our in country support crew, but I will post again when I am next using the net :-)
